Cell phones used to be something that only rich people had. Today they aren�ft just a luxury or something for emergencies. People carry them around everywhere and people of all ages have them. Some are designed for very young children so they can call their parents and emergency numbers. May of us take out cell phones for granted and never stop to consider how they work. One of the most important elements of any cell phone is the SIM card. SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. This is what allows the various types of information to be stored in there. This type of information includes the phone numbers, list of names, ringtones, and other information you have in there. This can be important to their investigation if they are trying to determine where certain phone calls have come from. Since there is really no directory out there of cell phone numbers many people think they are completely anonymous. Yet if you are doing something illegal law enforcement can use their access to find out about cell phone use from SIM cards. A SIM card is made up of a code of 19 numbers. All of the numbers on that code are for a specific purpose. The first two numbers will identify the ID of the company marketing the cell phone. The next two are for the country. The next two cover the network that the cell phone belongs to. There are four numbers that will identify the month and the year that the SIM card was made. These are followed by two numbers that are a configuration code. Seven digits remain with the first six being the SIM number and the last one being a check digit. If you are going to upgrading to a new cell phone you should ask about having your SIM card information transferred. This can often be done before the service is completely shut off on the old phone. If you don�ft do this you will lose all of the data you had stored on your old cell phone. Many people end up having to write it all down manually and then programming it into their new phone because they don�ft realize that the SIM card has all of that information readily available for them to access.

SIM card readers allow the various types of information on them to be read. There are many uses for them. Lets say you accidentally drop your cell phone and it is in pieces. You have likely heard the various advertisements around about free SIM cards. Yet you do need to be very careful about such offers. Chances are what you get for free isn�ft going to do you much good. Free SIM cards aren�ft going to get you cell phone service and so you will be charged for that. Even if the phone that the SIM card goes into doesn�ft cost you anything you will have either a rate plan or a per minute charge. These may apply to ongoing cell phone usage plans as well as to prepaid plans. Those that allow you to prepay for service are very effective for individuals without credit or no credit. They are also good for youths that don�ft have the ability to get a cell phone through a business. This way you pay in advance and know how much time you can use the cell phone. Free SIM card offers are often nothing more than just a ploy to get you to take part in the portion of the process that you do need to pay for. Make sure you are very cautious about advancing with such products. You definitely don�ft want to be taken advantage of because you didn�ft read all of the fine print. Some companies do offer a full size free SIM card though that you can have as a back up. This way you will be able to insert it into your phone, copy material, and then have it should your phone have problems. You can also insert it into another model of phone with the same manufacturer. This is a way those that your SIM card information can be stolen so be very careful. In reality, for most people a free SIM card isn�ft anything to get excited about. They aren�ft going to provide you with very much value. With the cost of cell phone service continuing to drop all the time they are affordable enough to get with one. There is very little reason why you should have to go out of your way to piece together your own cell phone plan this way. It simply is going to be time consuming and not really beneficial to you.

Prepaid SIM Cards

Prepaid SIM cards are an excellent way to make sure you get cell phone service that fits into your budget. You will have to pay in advance for the units on the cell phone. Most of these prepaid SIM cards allow you to have the service on the phone for a set period of time. You need to keep a close look out for this as well though because if you still have units but the air time has ended your prepaid SIM card won�ft be valid. When you attempt to use the phone it will tell you that your service is no longer active. In many instances you can make a phone call and get this service reactivated. You want to make sure the amount of prepaid units will roll over as well. There is a good chance that you won�ft be able to keep the same phone number though if you let the prepaid SIM card expire. As a result you will need to let everyone know that number has been changed which can be annoying. Many youths think they must have a cell phone due to all their friends having one. Yet we have all heard nightmare stories of bills coming in with hundreds owed for downloads and text messages. A prepaid SIM card will ensure this doesn�ft happen. While your teenager will love being able to have a cell phone you can get some peace of mind from it as well. There will be no reason for them not to call you when they are going to be late and you should be able to reach them when you want to. Most prepaid SIM cards are extremely affordable. Some of them are as low as three cents per minute. That is an excellent price that really can�ft be beat by most cell phone companies. You also won�ft be tying yourself to a lengthy two year contract like you will with some cell phone companies. These days you can easily buy prepaid SIM cards at most retailers and online. Make sure that they will work in your particular area code though if you get them online or that can be a problem for you. The more time you buy on your prepaid SIM card though the less expensive it will be for you.

iPhone SIM Cards

The iPhone is said to be the most advanced phone on the market and people have been very happy with them. Ironically, many people have been surprised to find that this piece of advanced technology relies on the old style of SIM card. This was discovered when people tried to update with newer versions and weren�ft able to do so. For those that had a very good cell phone but wanted to upgrade to the iPhone it has been a sore spot. Apple is aware of this problem and they continue to work to resolve it. They biggest problem is due to the various ways in which SIM cards for cell phones are encrypted. There are some patches that Apple has been trying to iron out that will work with some types of cell phones but not with others. This means if you are going to transfer over to an iPhone you should write down all of the contacts and relevant information that is in your old phone. It will save you a great deal of frustration and difficult down the road. In most types of cell phones though you can easily remove the SIM card. This isn�ft the case with the iPhone. In fact if you aren�ft familiar with the process you may not even be able to find your SIM card immediately. This has given some people the false impression that it doesn�ft actually have one. You will have to use a paper clip to reach it and remove it. What is even more ironic though is that people that have had trouble with their iPhone and sent it in took out their SIM card. They were then able to use it effectively in other models of AT&T phones. The biggest question is why isn�ft there a two way compatibility? This is something that really puzzles people at Apple. Yet they are a leader in customer service and you can be sure they will find a way to make it all work together. You do want to be very aware that removing the SIM card from an iPhone can void your warranty. This is due to the information about the operating system can be ruined.
