Canoes

A canoe is a narrow boat that is powered by human strength. Canoes are usually pointed and both ends which are also known as the stern and the bow. Open on the top, with seats going from side to side. Some canoes can also be covered. Canoes are essentially made from different types of wood. Although through time; some canoes are being made now of different varieties of materials.

There are seven parts to a real canoe. These parts consist of the bow, stern, hull, seats, thwart, gun whale, and the deck. The earliest known canoes were made from hollowed out tree trunks. Preferably birch bark, however in North America often times white cedar was used. Many canoes are usually the same symmetrically which means you should be able to paddle them or guide them in either direction and they should handle the same.

Depending on the usage of the canoe will usually decide what the canoe should ultimately be made out of. For example, a wood and canvas canoe is considered fragile, and isn't the best type of material for a canoe that will be in rough water, although wooden canoes are quieter. Good for observing wildlife or a trip down a quiet river or stream. Other canoes that are made of different materials are often considered more durable and can withstand rougher water, or a small electric or gas motor to propel them through the water.

The modern canoes of today are usually categorized by the intended use and some are basically not recommended for certain types of conditions. The manufacturers at least put these in categories so consumers know. Amazingly you can't just simply just go out and buy a canoe anymore.

There are too many different designs and styles to tell someone you want to buy a canoe. Some of the types by different manufacturers today are touring canoes, prospector canoes, Long distance canoes, Whitewater canoes, open canoes, racing canoes, inflatable canoes, outrigger canoes, as the list goes on.

Many people compare a kayak to a canoe thinking they are the same and they are not. A canoe will look basically the same one end to the other regardless of which end you are standing at. While a kayak does look the same, there are different components and it is covered many times as well as being very light.

Pelican Canoes

The Pelican canoe is ultimately designed for recreation and touring purposes. These canoes are well made and have superior stability. They are easy to paddle and carrying them from one point to another can be done with ease with the assistance from three people. There are additionally different types of the pelican canoe that you can choose from.

Since the pelican canoe made its debut forty years ago, there have initially been several improvements made to the canoes. One pelican canoe design is that for hunters in mind. It is made of a green color and is durable for long stretches on the water. Perfect for duck hunting and other hunting excursions. It is sporty in its own class, with a narrow front that cuts through water quickly, and a wider backend so it has the capability of being used with paddles or an electric or gas motor too.

The Pelican canoe is affordable and many types of the pelican can be used for a variety of water amusement and outdoor activity. There are some with only two seats in them, while others could have up to four seats. In this context the Pelican canoe is at the top of the list among canoes. Although there are several brands of canoes on the market today the Pelican canoe has received a five star rating more times than most. Research and development on the Pelican canoe is constant and ongoing. New improvements and designs are always in the making.

The Pelican canoes are available in many different colors; this is especially the case with those canoes made by Pelican for family use or for leisure and recreational use. The Pelican canoe can be purchased in many different areas, and in many different sporting goods stores. The weight of the Pelican canoes vary depending on what style an individual is actually looking for.

Pelican canoes are so popular they can be also be found on the Internet at various web sites, along with information and pricing. Also, many times the web site will offer a location finder for a dealer near you that sells the Pelican canoe. The Pelican canoes are somewhat resistant to the elements of the weather as well. Again, this depends on the type of Pelican canoe you are looking at and what is will essentially be used for.

Outrigger Canoes

An outrigger canoe is known as featuring a unique style which includes one or more lateral support float devices which are known as riggers. The outrigger shows a greater form of stability than other canoes and is seaworthy where other canoes often fall short in this category. The smaller outrigger canoes often only have one single outrigger on the port side, whereas larger canoes have the double outrigger usage.

The first outrigger canoes were of a rough design and the concept quickly caught on because they were considered easier to handle in somewhat harsh waters as well as seaworthy. Outrigger canoes in today's society have come a long way in design. Although the main concept is completely the same there are virtually many different types of outrigger canoes that can be found.

Some outrigger canoes of today are designed for racing in ocean waters and high waves, while others are based on a simpler design which doesn't involve more than one rigger to the side. The differences in outriggers themselves have changed as well. Some of the outriggers are made of foam or poly foam combinations, while other outriggers are made of a heavier material.

The basic idea for the outrigger canoe is to not only offer durability in harsh waters but also to give a form of better and meaningful balance to the main portion of the canoe. The outrigger canoe can almost be compared to a body with arms; the body is stable as long as the arms remain out. This is the same concept for the outrigger canoe.

However, when it comes to racing outrigger canoes, there is basically the one outrigger, and many of those racing with these types of canoes have trained to virtually raise or lean the canoe to the side that does not have the outrigger for quick maneuvers and turning capabilities.

Watching outrigger canoes race is an experience and the sport is becoming increasingly popular as more improvements are being designed and detailed into newer versions of outrigger canoes. Although, if it is to be used for personal use, the outrigger canoe is perfect for those waters that a basic style of canoe would not be able to go. In fact, some types of outrigger canoes today are designed to have netting between the outrigger and the actual canoe, for storage of fish, floats, nets, and many other items.

Aluminum Canoes

Aluminum is a type of material that is used for many items, including canoes. They are heavier than many other types of materials used to make canoes. Yet it is durable enough to offer the strength that is needed to keep it afloat in the water. They can take a beating and still be reliable enough to put into the water again and again. This means you won't have to spend very much time taking care of minor repairs on an aluminum canoe.

Many fishermen enjoy using an aluminum canoe. In addition to being long lasting and durable, they don't have to worry as much about tipping over. Aluminum canoes are more balanced so if you have a big fish on the end of your line you can focus on it and not worry about the canoe. Even in bad weather an aluminum canoe is able to stand up to the elements.

You will find aluminum canoes come in many different models for your convenience. Some people prefer the old fashioned type where you use paddles to maneuver the canoe. It takes more power than you may think to move such a piece of equipment through the water though. You need to have plenty of strength in your upper arms.

Other models of aluminum canoes have a motor on them. This makes it much easier for a person to get around in them. You can choose from either an electric or a gas motor. Those that feature an electric motor are the most expensive models to choose from. Yet many individuals find that they are easy to start and easy to maneuver. Therefore they can get around the water in their aluminum canoe with ease.

You will find a great selection of aluminum canoes featured at various sporting good stores. Take your time to look at the features that are offered on each of them. This way you can be sure you get what you want. Keep the overall weight of the aluminum canoe in mind as well. You don't want it to be a chore to get it into the body of water.

Even though aluminum canoes are more expensive than other materials, you will likely find it to be quite a good investment if you like to spend time on the water. You can also look at buying a used aluminum canoe if the price of a new one is more than you can afford to spend right now.

Used Canoes

Not everyone can afford to buy a new canoe or will get enough use out of it to warrant the cost. Used canoes can be purchased from many used dealers, or personal ads as well. There are however, some setbacks to purchasing a used canoe. You obviously have no idea how much usage has been put into a used canoe, however if the used canoe is an aluminum canoe, then there are times when you can see the wear and usage that it has been through.

In other cases, on many used canoes you can tell if they have been repaired or not. Although this is not always easy, if the used canoe is looked over carefully it can be noticed in some situations. Used canoes are cheaper than buying a new one. But the used canoes have no guarantee and most of those canoes that are purchased new now, have some type of warranty or guarantee applied to them with the sale.

If you are actually in the market for a used canoe you shouldn't be afraid to ask several questions about the canoe. The last thing you want to do is get a used canoe that has a pin hole leak because it wasn't checked or questions were not asked about the used canoe. In some situations, if a used canoe is not all that old, and it is being sold, some former owners will actually agree to put it into the water somewhere for inspection, although not all sellers are this accommodating. This is why it is so important that questions are asked.

When it comes to a used canoe questions such as where it was stored, how many times it has been in the water, has it ever been repaired and if yes, how was it damaged, and so forth. These are all good questions a buyer might want to ask someone who is selling a used canoe.

Also, if it is possible to have the used canoe placed in the water somewhere to show that there are no critical pin hole leaks or cracks. And this is not saying put it into the water and take it right back out again. It should be for like a period of all day, or all night, whatever the case may be.

Buyers should proceed with caution when buying a used canoe, however not too cautious, because there are some used canoes that are for sale that are more than reasonably priced, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the used canoe whatsoever.
